Three Ways to Do the Same Job

A garage door opener moves a trolley along a rail, and the trolley pulls the door. Chain, belt, screw and direct drive units differ only in how the trolley is moved. Because the springs carry the weight of the door, the drive type has very little to do with capability and a great deal to do with noise, maintenance and price.

Chain Drive

A chain drive pulls the trolley with a roller chain running over a sprocket. It is the oldest and cheapest arrangement, it is mechanically simple, and it will run for decades with occasional lubrication. It is also the loudest, because a metal chain under load transmits vibration into the rail and the rail transmits it into the structure. In a detached garage that hardly matters. Under a bedroom it is the reason people replace an otherwise healthy opener.

Belt Drive

A belt drive replaces the chain with a reinforced rubber belt, usually steel or fibreglass corded. It is significantly quieter, needs no lubrication, and in normal residential service lasts as long as a chain. It costs more. The belt itself is not the fragile part people assume: a reinforced belt in a garage is not exposed to sunlight or ozone in the way a car belt is, and the failure mode is usually the motor or the logic board long before the belt.

Screw Drive

A screw drive turns a threaded steel rod and drives the trolley along it. It has few moving parts and a directness that some technicians prefer. Older units were noisy and sensitive to temperature; modern ones with a lined rail are much better. They are less common now, and parts availability is a fair question to ask before buying one.

Direct Drive and Wall Mounted Units

Direct drive units put the motor on the trolley itself and run it along a stationary chain, which removes most of the vibration path. Wall mounted, or jackshaft, openers do away with the ceiling rail entirely and drive the torsion shaft from the side of the opening. Both are quieter again. The wall mounted type has a second advantage that matters in a lot of Orange County garages: it frees the entire ceiling, which is what you want if you are fitting a car lift, overhead storage or a tall vehicle.

Horsepower Is Mostly a Red Herring

Ratings of a half, three quarters and one horsepower are marketing units more than engineering ones, and they are not comparable across manufacturers. On a properly balanced door, a half horsepower unit handles a standard double door without complaint. More power does not make a door open faster, and it does not compensate for bad springs. If you have a solid wood or insulated door that is genuinely heavy, or a very tall door, then a higher rating is reasonable. Otherwise it is money spent on a number.

The Specifications That Do Matter

A DC motor with soft start and soft stop is quieter and gentler on the door than an older AC unit. A battery backup is genuinely useful in an area that sees planned power shutoffs, because an attached garage door is often the only practical way out. Rolling code remotes are standard now and worth confirming on anything secondhand. Look for the safety reversal and photo eye system to be current and undefeated, and for the manufacturer to still be selling logic boards for the model.

What to Do Before You Choose

Test the door by hand first. If it is out of balance, fix that before buying anything, because a new opener on a bad door will be loud, will strain and will fail early, and you will have paid to hide a mechanical fault behind a quieter machine.
