Belt Drive

A belt drive replaces the chain with a reinforced rubber belt, usually steel or fibreglass corded. It is significantly quieter, needs no lubrication, and in normal residential service lasts as long as a chain. It costs more. The belt itself is not the fragile part people assume: a reinforced belt in a garage is not exposed to sunlight or ozone in the way a car belt is, and the failure mode is usually the motor or the logic board long before the belt.

Screw Drive

A screw drive turns a threaded steel rod and drives the trolley along it. It has few moving parts and a directness that some technicians prefer. Direct Drive and Wall Mounted Units

The force settings determine how hard the opener is allowed to push before it decides it has met resistance. Confusing them is why so many faults get misdiagnosed.

The Photo Eyes

A pair of units mounted low on either side of the opening, one sending an infrared beam and one receiving it. Break the beam while the door is closing and the door stops and goes back up. They sit low deliberately, usually within six inches of the floor, because that is where a child or a pet would be. If they are mounted high to stop them triggering, they are no longer protecting the thing they exist to protect.

Why They Nuisance Trip

Almost every photo eye fault is alignment, dirt or sunlight, in that order. A bracket knocked by a bicycle takes the beam out of line, and the indicator light on one unit will usually flicker or go out. Dust and cobwebs on the lens do the same thing more gradually.
